Life Skills - Car Maintenence & Safety
When our students walk into adulthood, they don’t just need diplomas — they need real-world skills that help them stay safe, confident, and independent.
That’s exactly what our recent Car Maintenance & Safety Life Skills session was all about.
Learning what to do when things go wrong
Volunteer Ken Deagle led an incredibly practical, no-nonsense class on car safety and ownership. In the classroom, students walked through real-life scenarios they might face on the road:
What to do if you’re in a car accident.
How to respond if you’re pulled over in a traffic stop.
What to do if a tire blows out or the car suddenly doesn’t feel safe.
How to stay calm, call for help, and protect yourself and your passengers.
Ken didn’t just share “rules of the road” — he helped students understand why each step matters, so they feel prepared instead of panicked if something unexpected happens.
Opening the hood on car ownership
After safety basics, students took their learning outside to see what’s under the hood. They learned:
How to do simple visual checks on a vehicle.
Why regular maintenance matters for safety and long-term savings.
How to plan and budget for car costs like insurance, registration, gas, and repairs.
Tips for shopping for a used car and spotting potential red flags before they buy.
These are the kinds of decisions many young adults have to make quickly — sometimes without anyone to guide them. Our goal is to slow that down, give students a safe place to ask questions, and help them make smart, confident choices.

A volunteer who keeps coming back
We are especially grateful that Ken is not only leading this class but also returning for more car care lessons. On top of that, he has stepped in as our driving instructor, giving students even more one-on-one support as they prepare to get on the road.
His time, patience, and willingness to share decades of experience are a powerful gift. Every lesson adds up to safer drivers, smarter car owners, and young adults who feel more in control of their future.
Why this matters for our students
Many of the youth we serve are navigating adulthood with limited support. A flat tire, a scary traffic stop, or a bad used-car purchase can quickly become overwhelming and expensive.
By teaching car safety and ownership skills, Robyne’s Nest is helping students:
Stay safer on the road.
Avoid costly mistakes.
Build confidence in handling real-world problems.
See that their community believes in them enough to show up and teach them.
We’re so thankful for volunteers like Ken and supporters like you who make these Life Skills classes possible.
